Preparing for the Wings

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

In preparation for the wings arriving next month, I had to make some room in the hanger (garage).  I neatly tucked the smaller components (VS, Stabilator, Rudder) onto the suspended shelf above the garage door.  The tail cone was a bit more challenging!  I have a nice tall garage, with plenty of overhead room.  I got a couple pulleys and hoisted it safely up and out of the way.

See photos below.  The first photo shows the workbench cleared and ready for wings.  The second photo shows the tailcone suspended from the garage ceiling.

Fairings

Friday, January 15th, 2010

After I disassembled the empennage following the form/fit session, I worked on the fairings for the vertical stabilizer and the rudder.  The fairings are made of fiberglass, and create the smooth top to both.  I had to sand a bit of the material off of each to make them fit, which was done quite easily with a small sanding wheel and a little compressed air.  The photos below show the VS fairing clecoed to the top of the VS.
